Just over six months ago, my husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.  It was progressing fast and we were noticing discouraging changes every week.
I came across a book by Dr Dale Bredesen which described some benefits he had found with Alzheimer’s patients with altering their diets and lifestyle quite radically.  The End of Alzheimer’s described poor diet as a big contributor to causing dementia – and, more specifically, Alzheimer’s Disease.  I contacted Mary and asked her if she had heard of this book and could work with us to help us to work through The Bredesen Protocol.  Mary was already familiar with Dr Bredesen’s work, having studied it previously.  She was happy to work with us.
What we were attempting to do was pretty much ‘the impossible’ as far as the medical profession was concerned; we hoped to turn back the effects of a disease that was fast overtaking my husband’s brain.  We had had all the medical tests and their best hope was to slow down its progress.
Mary put my husband on a clean eating diet, paying particular attention to the Bredesen Protocol’s guidelines.  Lots of foods we had thought were healthy were not allowed on this diet and Mary helped us find substitutes we were happy to eat.  We had to pay attention to protein amounts and other factors.  It took quite a lot of adjustments to get it right.  There were also many lifestyle changes and some supplements.  Our doctor had prescribed a single monotherapy tablet – which wasn’t expected to do anything other than, at best, slow the disease down.
Six months later, after having an initial neurological cognitive test score of 17 out of 30, my husband scored 25 out of 30.  The neurologist was astounded, and said,  “Whatever you’re doing, keep doing it.”
We are convinced that my husband’s quality of life, his cognitive awareness, and his general well-being have improved 100%.  He is able to read, walk the dog alone and find his way back home, play music and hold a normal conversation again. His interest in life has picked up considerably.  We cannot overstate the improvement in our lives on many levels because of this new diet.
